چکیده

Using experimental data obtained from in vitro bioaugmentation studies of a sand filter community of 13 bacterial species, we develop an individual-based model representing the in silico counterpart of this synthetic microbial community. We assess the inter-species interactions, first by identifying strain identity effects in the data then by synthesizing these effects into a competition structure for our model. Pairwise competition outcomes are determined based on interaction effects in terms of functionality. We also consider non-deterministic competition, where winning probabilities are assigned based on the relative intrinsic competitiveness of each strain. Our model is able to reproduce the key qualitative dynamics observed in in vitro experiments with similar synthetic sand filter communities. Simulation outcomes can be explained based on the underlying competition structures and the resulting spatial dynamics. Our results highlight the importance of community diversity and in particular evenness in stabilizing the community dynamics, allowing us to study the establishment and development of these communities, and thereby illustrate the potential of the individual-based modelling approach for addressing microbial ecological theories related to synthetic communities.

مقایسه کارایی صافی یک لایه با بستر ماسه و صافی دو لایه با بسترهای لیکا و آنتراسیت در حذف مواد آلی و کدورت

Backgrounds and Objectives: Improvement of water quality standards and inability of mono layer filters in producing such quality caused researchers attended to multi layer filters. Due to specific characteristics of anthracite and leca can improve removal of organic materials and Surface over flow rate. The aim of this research was evaluation performance of dual media filters (anthracite/leca) ...

Changes in respiration activities and bacterial communities in a bioaugmented oil-polluted soil in response to the addition of acyl homoserine lactones

The effect of bacterial quorum sensing (QS) signals on the respiration activity of an oil-polluted soil with and without the addition of an alkane-degrading bacterial consortium was investigated. The addition of C4eC12-HSL N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) to the contaminated soil with the bacterial consortium resulted in a significant increase in CO2 evolution rates. Experiments with 1, 10 and...

Prediction of the soil-water characteristic curve of dune sand stabilized with SBR polymer and MICP process in the Jabal Kandi area

Introduction The geotechnical engineering problems involving unsaturated soils are included water flow, shear strength and volume change. Soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) describes the constitutive relationship between soil suction and soil water content. SWCC may be determined directly or indirectly in the laboratory. Because of the various difficulties involved in the direct measuremen...

Performance of Continuous Electrocoagulation Process for Turbidity Removal from Sand Filter Backwash Water

The presence of particles such as algae, clay, organic materials and water-soluble substances often create turbidity or color in water. In recent years, electrocoagulation process has attracted an extensive attention due to its advantages. Since sand filters are widely used in water treatment industry and their corresponding backwash water is large in volume, turbidity removal will save water c...

A survey on the performance of moving bed biofilm reactor and rapid sand filter in wastewater treatment

Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) is a process in which attached growth is utilized for wastewater treatment. This process does not require sludge recycling or backwash. Activated sludge processes can be promoted to an MBBR by adding media to an aeration tank. Rapid sand filter is a physical method for the removal of total suspended solids (TSS) in advanced wastewater treatment. The purpose of ...
